Bloodsucking Asian Vampire Mite

Tallahassee , Fl. - America's farmers have a new enemy. The bloodsucking Asian vampire mite. The mite is killing America's honeybees, which are essential for pollinating crops. The mites arrived in the U.S. in the 1980's. In the last six months, the mites have killed a full half of the honeybee population. As a result, certain fruits and vegetables may be hard to find. Without bee pollination, a third of the food grown in the U.S. would not exist. Science has developed chemical agents that are effective in killing the mites, but as time goes by their offspring become immune to the toxins. The problem has spread to the point that beekeepers are renting their bees to farmers. Taken from ShortNews
