Nitpicks & Rumors - March

Nitpicks
Pick - Picks & Grips
Picks & Grips (PG's) is my latest in mind rambling, an idea that slowly evolved. PG is a thumbs up or thumbs down personal opinion on everything from thoughts, products or whatever. PG's will not include reviews of everything, just points of interest that came to my mind. Yes, I meant to write Grips, not Gripes....I like how it rhymes. Visualize grips as a clutched angered hand. In the end the Grips are nothing more than whinny gripes.
As indicated with this commentary, March is the first official posting with the new labeling.
Previous postings (2005: Dec) have been taken from older postings (and some elaborated) on a personal blog from December '05 except for the last three posts which were from late February '06, I have compiled together because of the difference in their format compared to the other postings.
The other previous postings initially were entertainment related (refer to PG 2004: Oct & PG 2005) and were not divided as Pick or Gripe. I traced back over 30 odds and ends postings to compile them into these two links for quick accessability. Hence, the older ones are not formatted (with comments and such) in the same manner.

Gripe - Tim Allen
Tim Allen is turning into the Disney version of Rob Schnieder...going from Santa to the Shaggy Dog, like Gigolo to Animal. Ahhh! The worst part is, I will still watch the films...Ahhh!

Gripe - Daniel Craig as Bond
Cast and crew members, please shut up. I don't care. Every other day there is somebody else defending Daniel Craig's portrayal of Bond. Honestly, I'm coming from the bitter taste that I wanted to see Brosnan at least two more times. I wasn't thrilled with this new guy coming in already. Yes, after every bond changeover there is an uproar, but seriously the audience will be the final judge. So, media, enough interviews with cast and crew trying to convince people to like him. All that coverage only makes me not care twice as much, and I would rather criticize Craig even more so because of the fact.

Gripe - Sarah Jessica Parker
Riding on a slow comeback trail that I would much rather everyone pushed her from, "Failure to give-a-load" (Failure to Launch) star Sarah Jessica Parker. Sorry Matthew Broadrick, but I cannot stand her.

Pick - VH1 Ahhhh!
So, there was I Love the
70's, 80's (I, II & III), 90's (I & II), and Holidays...now it's Toys! Seriously, these shows absorb my time! I have said it before, and I'll say it again, Why aren't these on DVD yet?

Pick - South Park's Comeback
Last night the much anticipated premier of new South Park episodes targeted Chef character. They had to. With all the press hype of Issac Hayes leaving because "he could no longer support a show that disrespected religion "(however Trey and Matt point out this was most likely a Scientology issue of religion), and the rumors of Tom Cruise pulling out Mission Impossible III plugging if Comedy Central re-aired the previous (and at the time only) Scientology bashing episode, Trapped in the Closet. Comedy Central has also recently stated that the re-run episode had purely been pulled to allow for tribute Chef episodes. Yeah right. Some fans,
Washington Post states, have gone as far as to ban MiIII until the episode can be aired again. Obviously, Trey and Matt had to appeal to their fans with their new episode. This is their tenth season. What a great way to attract people back to the show...and they certainly knew that those tuning in held high expectations.
So, within one week, they scrapped their original episode, made a new one, and boy does it ever reach the omigosh factor. Yes, Chef does appear with his voice hilariously cut and pasted from previous episodes, and Yes, he does get it...in fact, he was struck by lightning, caught on fire, falls from a burning bridge into a canyon, bounces of some rocks, gets impaled, shot, mauled by a mountain lion complete with the flesh torn from his face, eaten by a grizzly bear, and accused of being a child molester (In the end the organization turn him into a Darth Vader like character I am sure we may see again someday). They even went as far as to abstractly call Scientologists brainwashing pedophiles (Katie Holmes is close enough!).
I emphasize abstractly, because I am certain they could debate that if they (legally) needed to. However, the subtlety was noted, for example the kids take Chef to a psychiatrist which is a profession frowned-upon among Scientologists.
Previous reports had said that Hayes had checked in to a hospital January 17th due to exhaustion.
E! Online has recently stated that he had suffered a heart attack. Hayes has also rebuttled that and said it eas exhaustion...
South Park has its heart, and perhaps it's safety net balance. At Chef's funeral
Kyle said "A lot of us don't agree with the choices the Chef has made in the last few days. Some of us feel hurt and confused that he seemed to turn his back on us. But we can't let the events of the past few weeks take away the memories of how Chef made us smile. I'm going to remember Chef as the jolly old guy who always broke into song. I'm going to remember Chef as the guy who gave us advice to live by."
An estimated 3.5 million viewers including 2.3 million in the 18-to-49 age bracket tuned in, boosting South Park's highest-rated season premiere since 2002.
In the end, this is the revitalizing boost that South Park has needed. I wonder how long they can keep it up.

Gripe - Stoplights in my Neighborhood
Ok, I live on this one long stretch of road. Sometimes, going up the hill (about a mile and a half) takes close to half an hour with sitting in traffic. The road continues about another mile of horror past our place with about as much chaos. Why? The freaking stoplights. The lights turn green, but because the one up ahead has not, there is no room to pull forward. Why is this still happening. Why aren't there sensors set up for this to trigger traffic right on through. It's just blind stupidity and I am tired of living in it!

Gripe - Rotating Signs
We live near a Gold's Gym. The place looks like it was designed in the early seventies. All it needs now is some shag carpet and its good to go. Anyway. They have a sign near the intersection that rotates on a cube shape. It is so trashy. Other places in the lot have there sign pinned to one side as it spins. It just looks like dated garbage. So what happens this week? On the other side of the street, instead of a cube, a triangle shaped sign has popped up for the stores on that side. Yes, remain calm, it rotates too. The bank across the road has a big flat rotating square (boring in comparison). Overall I hate it all. Take them down please!

Picks - Gillette Fusion
I really love love love the pulsating Mach3 Turbo razor. Love it. I wasn't so sure that I needed another two blades to it, and a bonus single one, but thought I would try it. I got it the day it came out. My thoughts? Eh, its ok. I like the bonus blade but I hardly use it. I haven't really noticed much of a difference between the two. No, it does not take off the first few layers of skin, it shaves about the same as the Mach 3. I am sure that there are some major differences the company could tell you that, but nothing to run out and buy them for friends and family. I actually like the aftershave lotion that came for free with its purchase though.

Pick - Planters NUTrition Heart Healthy Mix
Each 1.5 oz bag contains a mixture of peanuts, almonds, pistachios, pecans, and hazelnuts. Altogether they kind of have a sunflower seed-like taste. I like these a lot. I have seen them for sale at Costco, but who knows for how long. The bag makes the claim that "scientific evidence suggests but does not prove" that one bag "may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease."

Pick - Hershey's Kissables
I saw a commercial for these about a month ago, and took a while to track em down. You can find them in the cady section of a grocery store. These candy-coated chocolate chips are insanely addicting. They are very yummy. Now, the chocolate itself is different than a regular chocolate chip, it seems a little bit richer in flavor. Check em out.

Pick - Pizza Hut's Cheesy Bites Pizza
A one topping pizza (I have only had it as peperoni) "pull-apart crust with 28 cheese filled bites lightly seasoned with the flavor of garlic butter." Although the garlic amount is a little bit more than "lightly." Lightly is when they give you that garlic butter in a little container, and you try and try to put a lot on, but it doesn't taste like much. The bites have more garlic taste than that, which is good. Anyway, I kinda like it.

Pick - Healthy Regardless of Diet
In short, Men's Health noted a recent study showing that burning 1,100 calories a week through exercise prevents the accumulation of dangerous belly fat (see my
full posting for definition), regardless of their exercise intensity or diet. I thought as much, I mean, running as much as I did in high school I always wondered how much of a factor diet truely was. Its important to eat healthy, but having seconds on meat etc sounds like one can eat normally. 1,100 calories is about 11 miles of jogging or walking, or 22 miles of biking, or 102 minutes of swimming, or three 30 minute circuit training workouts.

Gripe - Treadmills
Throughout this year I have been attempting to use the treadmill. I hate it. After three months of it, the machine still makes me dizzy because I don't quite have my bearings. I want to look straight ahead and not worry about the belt below...but because I am not one for being right on pace, it is still a struggle. I'm not kidding when I say this either. I usually set it for either 5 minutes, or to burn 50 calories. That's it. Now the step-up like machine, I don't have a problem...but that one feels more like biking than running.

Gripe - Mash Finale
I'm not crazy, but I feel like it! Nobody believed me that the last episode of Mash was not a laughing matter like the other episodes were. I had heard/read somewhere that one of the characters was riding a bus, and scolds a woman to silence a clucking chicken. She smothers it. Then it turns out that the chicken was actually a baby.
I gave up having people looking at me oddly, so here it is. I went to
wikipedia which says: ""Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen" was the final episode of M*A*S*H. The episode aired on February 28, 1983 and was 2.5 hours long. It was viewed by nearly 125 million Americans (77% of viewership that night) which established it as the most watched episode in USA's television history, a record which still stands today. The finale starts in the waning days of the war with Hawkeye in a mental hospital, finally driven over the edge by a bus ride gone terribly wrong. Returning from a trip to a beach, a wounded soldier is brought onto the bus. This is the first memory Hawkeye represses, and it's originally played off as a drunk and jovial Hawkeye wanting a bottle of whiskey to be passed to the back of the bus for someone he says "can't wait." The memory comes back again, and the person is revealed to be a soldier, and then the real situation rears its ugly head, as a frustrated Hawkeye, who cannot believe that the atmosphere on the bus is so jovial in the wake of this soldier's injury, calling for a bottle of plasma. The bus then picked up a group of Koreans who were refugees. Later, more wounded soldiers were picked up, and soon every person on the bus was in danger of being discovered and executed by a North Korean patrol. Hawkeye scolds the refugees to be quiet but a chicken begins to cluck and its owner responds by smothering it. Hawkeye breaks down crying as he remembers that the chicken was actually a baby, and he didn't want to remember it."
The episode went on into other storylines, wrap ups and some comedy...the spinoff,
AfterMash lasted for two years, and the other spinoff W*A*L*T*E*R didn't get picked up...but that was not my intent to write about here.

Gripe - American Inventor
How stupid is ABC? They have pitted American Inventor up against My Name is Earl, the Office and the OC. Why isn't it on at 8pm like last week? Was that because it was a two hour premaire? Bogus. I would have watched it if it was on at 8, but now I will only see whatever is on during the comercials of My Name is Earl and the Office because I would rather be watching them instead. Fools.

Pick - Simon Cowell
I wanted to hate the guy, but I like em. I am not a fan of American feed the system Idol. But I do like the idea behind it. I also like the idea behind Inventor (which has that one lady crying way too much, and a lot of them saying "America" way too much) and the new one about Talent. What amazes me furthermore is the fact that his fingers are dipped into FOX, ABC, and NBC. That is impressive. TV Filter summed it up best with two observations, what will he do for CBS and CW for a clean network sweep, and then noted the irony of a British guy associated with three shows using "America" in the title. Kinda funny. With Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Dancing with the Stars, and Miracle Workers...what is next?

Gripe - Extreme Garbage
Apparently, Extreme Makeover Home Edition has a memo requesting they find children with Down Syndrome, a parent with skin cancer or was robbed as places to hit next. Whatever. Who cares. Will the media shut up? Isn't that what people have been tuning in for? Don't people complain a lot when they help a family that doesn't seem to need help, why not specifically search for specific people that need help. I really don't care about this memo, and I'm not sure why anybody should. As an audience were we supposed to believe that the people selected were chosen to pull at the audiences strings to begin with? Again, whatever, this is not a newsflash, so lets wrap it up media. News please...

Pick - Saturday Night Live Digital Shorts
A reason to actually watch Saturday Night Live. I worked with a guy who was a huge fan of channel 101, he also loved the Awesometown pilot, which included Andy Samberg. Samberg and his cohorts Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer now write for SNL. I first saw the digital short called Lettuce. People online seemed fanatical about it. Ok...whatever. Then I saw the
Chronic of Narnia, it was ok, but still not anything I was all sugared up about (despite the fact my coworker was trying to incorporate "Crazy Delicious" into the daily sphere). Then I saw the Natalie Portman one, and I started warming up to them. They are pretty funny, and by Doppleganger I became a somewhat fan.

Gripe - Spider-Man 3 Black Costume
OK, here is were my comic book geek side pops out. I really really really hope that all this "Black Costume" hype is just that. Why? As much as I really would love to see the chaos involved with the Venom and Carnage characters...it's just way to early. There are so many other classic characters that should be given their time first because Venom and Carnage will put them all to shame. In saying so, based off the first two films, storywise it logically feels like a Hobgoblin vs a now good Harry Osborne Green Goblin. The Lizard will have to come into play soon, Mysterio too. Word has tried to place Sandman in, but I don't think they even need to incorporate that character so much primarily because he becomes a good guy. it's too early in the franchise to jump into the black suit without giving props to a good 20 years of comics.

Gripe - Daylight Savings
This is a long long time gripe of mine. Daylight savings is outdated and unnecessary...oh yeah, and irratating in the spring!

Gripe - Ocean's Thirteen
Really, seriously, do I have to even make a comment about this? Why are we living in a sequel remake hell!

Gripe - Magnum PI Movie
The word is that the studio wants someone other than Tom Selleck to star in it. Why? What the heck...let him star in it. Was Dukes of Hazard not a good enough example? What next? Murder She Wrote staring Shelly Long? Please.

Pick - Wussy SUV
Wussy SUV saves gas by falling into a sinkhole caused by Brooklyn water main break. Just a zen image for everyone.

Rumors
Movies
Against All Enemies
Oscar winner Paul Haggis (Crash) is circling Columbia Pictures' "Against All Enemies," the studio's adaptation of Richard Clarke's bestselling book. Clarke was a former White House counterterrorism adviser. His book focused on the events leading up to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the subsequent reactions to those tragic events. If done literally, the film's cast of characters would include George Bush, Condoleezza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld and Clarke himself.
Tim Allen Sequels
The first one is barely out of the gate, yet director Brian Robbins says Disney are already looking to get going on a sequel to Tim Allen's "The Shaggy Dog". Robbins already has "a sequel planned out", he said in an interview with Latino Review. Meantime, Tim Allen has sworn off Santa films forever. He's hanging up his red suit after the upcoming "Santa Clause 3", reports Contact Music. Comedian Jay Thomas (TV's "Murphy Brown") appears in the film, playing the Easter Bunny, and tells the LA Daily News that it was quite punishing. "It took three hours to get into that bunny suit," he recalls. "To see Tim as Santa, Marty Short as Jack Frost, Kevin Pollack as Cupid and me as the Easter Bunny sitting together having lunch must have really been something."
Arrested Development Movie
Series creator Mitch Hurwitz has quit the show, leaving little hope for the series to continue on another network for a fourth season. Hurwitz hints to Variety that while "Arrested Development" has run its course as a TV series, a feature film is a possibility for the future. Negotiations have been underway between Fox, Imagine Entertainment, and the Showtime network. But the deal would have been contingent on Hurwitz' involvement. Hurwitz cites creative and financial concerns as the reason for his departure. Series executive producer Ron Howard asked if Hurwitz would remain as a series consultant rather than a showrunner. "I said I'd be happy to do that, but that as showrunner, I've gone as far as I can go," said Hurwitz.
Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride
(3.8.06) Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, Bill Murray, John Cusack and Benicio Del Toro have come together for a documentary on the life and death of gonzo journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson. The documentary, called Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride: Hunter S. Thompson On Film is currently wrapping up production. Depp played the author in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, the big screen adaptation of Thompson's book, along with Benicio Del Toro as his lawyer, Dr Gonzo. Writer/director Tom Thurman plans to have the documentary completed by August and will decided then whether to release it theatrically in order to be able to qualify for an Academy Award nomination. Thompson committed suicide last February at the age of 67 at his home in Colorado.
Casino Royale -Theme
(
3.15.06) Tina Turner has reportedly been asked to record the title song for new James Bond movie Casino Royale. The 66-year-old star recorded the theme tune for the 1995 spy adventure GoldenEye, and film bosses are convinced she will give the new rawer Bond - played by Daniel Craig - the required edge.
Tom Cruise
When Tom Cruise leaned of a repeat South Park episode, he contacted Paramount, the studio paying Cruise for starring in the 'Mission Impossible' films. He warned them that he would pull out of all promotional activity for the forthcoming 'Mission Impossible III' film unless the episode was axed. The episode entitled 'Trapped in the Closet' rips his scientology beliefs to shreds and shows him being trapped in a closet. Originally aired last November, it was due to be repeated on the Paramount cable channel, Comedy Central.
Dogma - A Possible Sequel
Kevin Smith said "Ever since 9/11, I have been thinking about a sequel of sorts. I mean, the worst terrorist attack on American soil was religiously bent. In the wake of said attack, the leader of the "Free World" outed himself as pretty damned Christian. In the last election, rather than a quagmire war abroad, the big issue was whether or not gay marriage was moral. Back when I made "Dogma", I always maintained that another movie about religion wouldn't be forthcoming, as "Dogma" was the product of 28 years of religious and spiritual meditation, and I'd kinda shot my wad on the subject. Now? I think I might have more to say. And, yes - the Last Scion would be at the epicenter of it. And she'd have to be played by Alanis. And we'd need a bigger budget - because the entire third act would be the Apocalypse. But regardless - yeah, a "Dogma" followup's been swimming around in my head for some time now."
Evan Almighty
Steve Carell, who appeared as an anchorman in the first film (Bruce Almighty), now has a career as a politician. He gets an audience with God, played by a returning Morgan Freeman, who tells him to build an ark in preparation for a flood. Lauren Graham (Gilmore Girls) is playing Evan's wife, and John Goodman (Roseanne) plays a congressman who takes Evan under his wing. The script was originally going to be used for a “Bruce Almighty 2” starring Jim Carrey, but has been retooled to suit the talents of “Office” star Carell. Currently it is scheduled for a June 29, 2007 release. (Also see previous posting Evan Almighty in Rumors - January)
Evil Dead
Penny Blood Magazine talked to Bruce Campbell about the upcoming remake of The Evil Dead he will be working on with Sam Raimi. "We don't really talk about [another] sequel too much 'cause Sam is too busy right now. It would all be kinda moot. But I think we're gonna do a remake. It'll be a whole new story, though. It won't be with Ash. It'll be the evil book, and it'll affect a whole new group of people in a different situation. More like a reinvention. A lot of people, they got really crabby on the Internet when they first heard that type of stuff. But, we would never do anything to insult them. The trick is to take that premise - and we think it's a scary premise - and use some cool modern day FX… so we won't have green garden hoses in the shots. We wanna make a flat out, scary-ass, un-rated horror film."
Will Ferrell is Alive
(
3.16.06) Funnyman Will Ferrell has laughed off a hoax report he died in a freak paragliding accident, insisting he's alive and well. A prank press release - featuring glaring grammatical and spelling errors - announcing the Anchorman star's demise in a San Diego, California, accident was posted on website iNewswire.com on Tuesday. The actor's publicist Matthew Labov says, "Not much to say other than we heard and read about it this morning and reacted accordingly. There was no point in trying to track (the source) down as it was obviously a hoax." Josh Meyers, owner of the paragliding company that was named in Ferrell's "death" story, adds, "I have no knowledge of Will Ferrell paragliding." According to Access Hollywood and other sources, Ferrell is currently in Canada working on his next movie.
Fresh Prince
The Fresh Prince is to apparently get a big screen version of its own. Don't get too excited though. Will Smith is supposedly just the Producer, with his Overbrook Entertainment company overseeing development and he is currently seeking a younger fresher 'Prince' to take on the role.
It Takes a Thief
Universal Pictures has attached Will Smith to star in a feature adaptation of the TV series It Takes a Thief, reports Variety. The Roland Kibbee-created series, which starred Robert Wagner, ran 1968-70. Smith will play a charming rogue who is blackmailed by the government into doing covert larceny for the good of his country. The film will put the professional thief in the employment of the CIA.
Joe Dirt 2
David Spade may be preparing a sequel to his 2001 opus "Joe Dirt." "I'm just doing the show for a while, might do another 'Joe Dirt' movie in the summer," Spade says. "That's about it. The show is really starting and that's what I have to do, like my day-to-day job." the script has been in the works for some time, at the urging of Happy Madison's patron saint. "We wrote it, because Sandler thinks it's funny," Spade explains. Like so many true classics, "Joe Dirt" has only found its niche in secondary markets. "I go on the road and I hear more about that than anything," Spade explains. "That's how you get feedback... Not everybody's asking about 'Lost and Found.'" The secret to the success of "Joe Dirt," it seems, is Wal-Mart.
Miss Potter
The Weinstein Company has acquired North American rights to Miss Potter from Phoenix Pictures and David Kirschner Productions, says The Hollywood Reporter. The Beatrix Potter biopic, which is in production in the U.K., stars Renée Zellweger, Ewan McGregor and Emily Watson and is being directed by Chris Noonan. Kirschner Productions' David Kirschner and Corey Sienega produce alongside Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and David Thwaites of Phoenix Pictures. Zellweger will serve as executive producer. Miss Potter explores the life of the author of such beloved children's books as "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" and her struggle for independence in Victorian England. The live-action film will have some animated elements.
Mummy 3
Oded Fehr (who played Bay in both The Mummy & The Mummy Returns) said, "The person that wrote it [the Mummy], created it, tells me they’re doing a third one." The most recent script, sees Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s (recently won an Oscar for The Constant Gardener) characters return, but with their grown-up son, to help fight off the bandaged baddie. It’s set in 1940, several years after the events of the first two films, with a new Mummy, China's first uber-Emperor Qin Shihuang, bringing on the pain.
Ocean's Thirteen
"
Ocean's Thirteen", which will film primarily on Warner sound stages this time (where a fully operational casino will be built), starts filming July 21st.
Open Hearts
Zach Braff ("Scrubs") will follow up his acclaimed directorial debut "Garden State", with a remake of "Open Hearts", according to The Hollywood Reporter. Braff will adapt, helm, produce and co-star in the romantic drama, a retool of a Danish classic about two couples whose lives become intertwined after a devastating car crash. Braff is set to play one of the lead roles.
Rogue
Nadine Velasquez (My Name is Earl) will join Jet Li's action-thriller "Rogue" for Lionsgate. The thriller tells of an FBI agent Jack Crawford (Statham) who starts a deadly game of cat and mouse with an Asian assassin (Li) responsible for starting a deadly war between Asian rivals.
Shrek the Third & More
The new film (aiming for a 5.18.07 release) finds Shrek and Fiona reluctantly reigning over Far, Far Away. But if they can find the heir to the throne and bring him back, they can return to their swamp. While Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots are in search of the heir, Fiona holds off a coup d'etat by Prince Charming. Antonio Banderas, in a recent interview, he mentioned that between Shrek 3 & 4, a spinoff titled, Puss in Boots-The Story of an Ogre Killer will be released. He also mentioned that in the fourth Shrek he will be voicing Puss and Boots badass brother.
Speed 3
Apparently FOX has approached both Sandy and Keanu about possibly coming back for a third instalment.
Supergirl
Actress Mischa Barton ("The OC") could be pulling on some blue tights over her bloomers soon, according to Cinemablend and The Post Chronicle. Warner Bros are apparently hot to cast the young actress in "Supergirl", playing the prevailing kryptonian cousin of Kal-El herself. The new film, the first big-screen venture for the superheroine since the poorly received 1984 film of the same name, would be released on the back of this Summer's "Superman Returns".
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Weinstein Company has poured a punnet of cash into a new CGI “Ninja Turtles” film, which Warners has agreed to distribute. The new film, won't feature the voice of Corey Feldman, will be much “grittier” than the first three films. Release date is set for March 30, 2007.
Terminator 4
According to producer Mario Kassar, "Terminator 4" is waiting in the wings, they're just waiting for a free spot in Arnold Schwarzenegger's calendar. Besides "Terminator 4", Schwarzenegger has a number of projects he's being pestered to do – including Warner's third "Conan" film.
Tortoise & Hippo
John Dykstra will make his directorial debut in "Tortoise and Hippo" based on a real-life event, scripted by "Shrek" co-writer Roger S.H. Schulman. Relevant Entertainment partner Mike Menchel is producing the film based on a wire-service photo discovered by his children in a newspaper. The widely circulated photo documented a baby hippo and 100-year-old tortoise comforting each other at a wildlife sanctuary in 2004 after being rescued from the Indian Ocean in the wake of the Asian tsunami. "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the With & the Wardrobe" director Andrew Adamson is in final negotiations to produce the live-action and photo-real computer-animated film.
Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon has now been hailed the world's highest paid actress. She gets paid more than what most films actually cost to make, production wise.
The Wolf Man
(
3.16.06) Traffic Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro is set to play a classic movie monster in the big screen remake of The Wolf Man. The Sin City actor will star in and co-produce the new version of the horror film. Like the original film, which starred Lon Chaney Jr., the remake will be set in Victorian England. Se7en writer Andrew Kevin Walker has started working on the script for the film. Shooting is scheduled to begin early next year, once Del Toro completes work on the Che Guevara biopic Guerrilla. The film will be released in 2008.
Robin Williams
Licence to Wed: Robin Williams is a minister who orders Mandy Moore and her new fiancée (John Krasinski) to a two-week pre-nup course if they wish to get married in his Church. When the groom fails the course, he loses both the church and the girl – but then fights to get her back. Williams is also working on Mrs Doubtfire 2.
Bruce Willis
Bruce Willis, interviewed on the set of his new movie Perfect Stranger with Halle Berry, said he can't tell you what will come first: A sequel to 16 Blocks or a new Die Hard 4.
Television
Free TV
AOL has released In2tv this month, a free service that allows you to watch tv shows whenever you please online. Granted, threre are only a handful of actual shows (and only about 10 episodes of any one show) but enough to kill some time. It loads 3-10 minute sections at a time, with an occassional commercial here and there. I was always curious to see Adventures of Brisco County Jr., classic Fugitive, and Steven Spielberg Presents Freakazoid, since I never saw them. It is also a nice opportunity to see the Wonder Woman series which I vaguely remember as a kid. Then there are those eighties sitcoms Growing Pains, Head of the Class, Perfect Strangers which felt like they were always on...but where are they now?
America's Got Talent
Fox has American Idol, on ABC he's the executive producer of American Inventor, this summer NBC has ordered Simon Cowell's newest series called "America's Got Talent."
Fellow executive producer Ken Warwick held a pair of press conferences to announce casting calls for the show, which is looking for comedians, singers, magicians -- anyone who thinks they can entertain America. The series will follow the "American Idol" blueprint by beginning with audition footage, then narrowing the field to the best acts. Viewer voting will help determine the winner, who will walk away with a $1 million prize.Cowell also says that the audition rounds will feature "a device to stop the act, which I won't reveal at the moment, but it's brutal." In response to a reporter's question, he does allow that the device is neither a gong nor a trap door. "A trap door is something I've requested for years on 'American Idol,' and I haven't been given one yet," he says with a laugh. Cowell says he spoke with FOX, which airs "Idol," about "America's Got Talent," but NBC, which was looking for its own talent competition franchise, was enamored of the idea from the start.
Andy Barker P.I.
Conan O'Brien has cowritten and will executive-produce a comedy pilot for former Late Night sidekick Andy Richter. Andy Barker P.I. stars Richter as a business-starved accountant who reluctantly takes on detective cases brought to him by people seeking his office's previous tenant.
Carnival Wrap-up
MediaVillage has heard that HBO is seriously considering developing a two hour movie or a four-hour miniseries that would tie up the tantalizing loose ends from the final episode of its supernatural dust-bowl drama "Carnivale". The series ended its second season in an abrupt manner that infuriated its loyal viewers, leaving them to wonder if Ben the healer could survive his violent confrontation with the evil Brother Justin, and if the newly possessed Sofie would succeed in bringing Justin back to life. The new production would be telecast sometime in 2007. Further, if that movie or mini does well, there's talk the pay cable giant might even consider resurrecting the franchise as an ongoing series in 2008.
Dave Chappelle
Comedian Dave Chappelle says he may not return to his hit Comedy Central show if the cable network goes through with plans to air new episodes from material he filmed before leaving the series. "I feel like it's kind of a bully move," Chappelle told the Dayton Daily News in a telephone interview. In May, Chappelle stunned his fans and the entertainment industry by skipping out on a $50 million contract and leaving "Chappelle's Show" in mid-production. He spent two weeks in South Africa before returning home to his farm near Yellow Springs. He has since resumed performing live standup. Chappelle said his possible return to "Chappelle's Show" is still up in the air. Comedy Central has said in the past it plans to air the material, but wouldn't comment on any current specific plans. "We are still waiting patiently for Dave to return to work, but we know that our viewers are looking forward to seeing the material he produced for the third season," Comedy Central said in a written statement.

A new TV series, based on the murderous exploits of Jason Voorhees is in the works, says Fangoria. Sean S.Cunningham, the brainchild behind the "Friday the 13th" films, says he's involved in a new series called "Crystal Lake Chronicles, I'd produce [and direct a little]. Tom Green
Tom Green was hospitalized for two broken ribs on Monday after being hit by a wave on a beach in Central America, the comedian's manager, Howard Lapides, confirmed to People.
The Joke's On You
(
3.24.06) Rumor has it that comedian Wayne Brady, who, sadly, has been largely MIA from the tube since his classic guest appearance as the anti-Wayne on "Chappelle's Show," is heading back to TV this summer, with a CBS hidden-camera series called "The Joke's On You."
King of Queens
CBS is negotiating with stars Kevin James and Leah Remini to return for a ninth season, but Channel Island has learned that a deal is looking increasingly iffy. The network last year agreed to pay James a reported $500,000 per-episode salary this season, making him among the highest-paid stars in prime time. And since James' film career is on the upswing -- he won plaudits for his work in last year's comedy "Hitch," alongside Will Smith -- he has alternatives if a favorable deal can't be struck. Due to James' commitments to upcoming feature projects, a decision on "King" would probably need to be made in the next few weeks, according to one person familiar with the situation. "It could go either way," Jeff Sussman, the actor's manager, said when reached by the Islander, adding that "It's up to the network" whether the show will go on. CBS may not need "King" as much as it did a year ago. The series has been an important utility player, if never a huge hit, and now kicks off the network's Monday comedy lineup. But executives may feel sufficiently covered on the sitcom side with "Two and a Half Men" and "How I Met Your Mother." Plus, the network has ordered episodes for next season of "The Class," an ensemble comedy from "Friends" writer David Crane, which was scheduled to start production this week.
The New Adventures of Old Christine
Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a hit show on her hands, playing a character that would make Elaine scream: "Get out!" Eight years after playing baby-phobic, brassy Elaine on Seinfeld and a cabaret singer on the 2002 dud Watching Ellie, Louis-Dreyfus is a divorced, sweetly bungling mom in CBS' The New Adventures of Old Christine (Mondays, 9:30 p.m. ET/PT). And if the show's impressive two-episode debut last week is any indication, audiences love her once again: 12.4 million watched the first airing, and the second episode drew 15.1 million sets of eyeballs, winning its time slot. "It appeals to me to show the imperfections of motherhood and womanhood, warts and all. I like playing somebody who has to apologize to their kid, all the time, for screwing up. That seems really real," says Louis-Dreyfus, a married mother of two boys, ages 8 and 13.
The Office
NBC is planning to shoot 10 online-only "webisodes" of its critically acclaimed comedy to air during the offseason. A debut date for the online episodes, which will stream at NBC.com, hasn't been set. "The Office" has been a big part of NBC's efforts to attract viewers through non-traditional outlets. The network webcast an episode on MySpace prior to its premiere last year, and the show has been one of NBC's more popular downloads on Apple's iTunes. The show has seen its ratings grown since it and "My Name Is Earl" made the move from Tuesday to Thursday nights in January. Since the switch, "The Office" has drawn about 8.7 million viewers per week and a 4.5 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic NBC prizes. The 18-49 number is a 22 percent improvement over its Tuesday average; viewers are up about 12 percent since the move.

Tom Selleck
(
3.17.06) ...interviewed the actor and author Robert B. Parker in January to discuss the Jesse Stone: Night Passage movie on CBS, Selleck told me, "I love playing Jesse Stone. That's not hype. We've got to do about fifty of these, but there are only five books." Parker, who also penned all the Spenser mysteries, promised that he is working on them as fast as possible. He better be right. CBS announced today that their newest Stone flick, Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise, will premiere on Sunday, April 30 at 9pm. It centers around the death of a teenage girl who is found floating in a lake in Paradise. While working on the case, Stone angers members of a powerful Boston mob. Selleck also serves as producer of Parker's Jesse Stone movies.

South Park
South Park kicks off its tenth season on March 22, and series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are stopping by "The Late Show with David Letterman" on March 13 to talk about the new episodes. Isaac Hayes (Chef) is leaving the show. Hayes is leaving because he feels the show has "embarked upon what he feels are inappropriate ridicule of religious communities...religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices." A rather unappreciative Matt Stone, co-creator of the show, bit back, saying "This is 100% having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem -- and he's cashed plenty of checks -- with our show making fun of Christians."

"That's not going to happen probably for another year and a half while we develop scripts and everything else," he says. "But it's fantastic; we've got some incredible writers. It's going to be much darker, much more character-based, and I think it's going to be everything the fans always wanted the prequels to be. They'll be one-hour episodes. It takes place between Episodes III and IV. It's going to be all-new characters, maybe a few bounty hunters in there to start the series off."
Twenty Good Years
(
3.9.06) John Lithgow will star in the NBC comedy pilot Twenty Good Years, about two fiftysomething men who decide to make the most of the next two decades
Who Wants to be a Superhero?
Stan Lee talked to SCI FI Wire about his upcoming reality show Who Wants to be a Superhero?, which premieres on SCI FI Channel this summer: In Who Wants to Be a Superhero?, a group of people dressed in costumes of their own design will take part in a series of weekly challenges. At the conclusion of each episode, Lee will appear and, much like Donald Trump on NBC's The Apprentice, dismiss one of the contestants. "We're going to test the applicants and find out which of them really has the stuff to be a superhero," Lee said in an interview. "The challenges will be mental, moral and physical. We certainly won't ask anybody to fly through the air like Superman or swing on a web like Spider-Man. But there are other things that go into determining whether somebody has the right stuff to be a superhero."

"We'll probably start doing some shows here and there in June and July," he tells Billboard, "but for the most part, we're just going to kind of take it easy." The first-time papa is getting plenty of advice from those who have gone before him, including: Keep any potential baby names to yourself. "That's the first advice people gave me: 'Look, when you start thinking about names, don't f*cking tell your family. Everyone will start piping in there.'" He would not spill the beans to Billboard either, but adds, "It's a family name, so it's very nice. It's not like Moonchild or Tinkerbell or something like that." Fatherhood may affect his songwriting, but he says a greater pull right now is the piano his wife recently gave him for his birthday. "I've never played piano, and I've always wanted to. I taught myself how to play every instrument that I play. I've never taken lessons. Just before my birthday, I sat down and started to figure out how to play piano, just by ear. Pac-Man World Rally (2006, ESRB Rating) PS, Spot, IGN, Spy, Stat
Developers: Namco Bandai Games (Smart Bomb Int) Official
Platform: PS2
Details: (7.30.06) The game's 15 race tracks are designed to contain a whole lot of jumps and such to keep racers on their toes. In addition, there are six battle arenas for multiplayer action. You'll also be able to collect power-ups to attack opponents or gain an edge in the race, as well as Pac-Man's signature fruit pickups, which in Pac-Man World Rally unlock secret shortcuts. In Pac-Man World Rally, you'll find pellets scattered around the track, and once you collect enough of them you'll essentially earn a Power Pellet, which automatically switches you to control over a Super Pac-Mobile. All of the other racers will change to blue ghosts, allowing you to gobble up anyone in your way for a short time. There are a ton of other weapons and pickups you'll have at your disposal. They work in a similar fashion to the Mario Kart series in that you're able to either toss them up in front of you are drop them behind you to foil your foes in the rear. One of the "weapons" that we saw is a snowman who covers the track in ice, causing your opponents to spin out of control. Fruit pickups unlock secret shortcuts, meaning they're essentially keys.

Winback 2: Project Poseidon
(4.18.06)
Winback 2 - Project Poseidon differs from the original N64 and PS2's original Winback: Covert Operations by giving players access to a new "route" system. Throughout the game's 30 missions, players will be able to experience each from the perspective of three operatives, including lead operative Craig Contrell. Each playable character will be proficient with six weapon types, including sniper rifles. With Winback 2, KOEI seems to be trying for a more action oriented, team-based approach. The original was notable for its unique blend of action and stealth elements, requiring you to proceed slowly through each level, frequently flatten yourself against walls and check around corners. Sound familiar to Splinter Cell? Though they're not really the same game, Winback did it first.
