Factoids, Extras & Eggs:
1. The spelling of Colour was a nod to the producer of the album, Gil Norton, who is British.
2. This album marks the debut of the Foo Fighters as a "band." Not just Grohl.
3. It was loosely conceived by Grohl as a concept album which documented the beginning and end of a romantic relationship. Over the course of the making of the album, Grohl's own marriage to photographer Jennifer Youngblood ultimately ended in divorce.
4. William Goldsmith (now drummer for Fire Theft, formerly aso a part of Sunny Day Real Estate) officially quit the band, reportedly due to his belief that Grohl was unhappy with his performance.
5. Walking After You New Version recorded for soundtrack/single differs from the album, and was performed by the full band, including then-recent additions (Taylor Hawkins and Franz Stahl, with guest backing vocals from Shudder to Think's Craig Wedren). As a result of trying to muster as much emotion as possible, Grohl broke down during the recording of the vocal take which ended up being used in the final mix. The new version also utilizes the addition of a piano part during the bridge, performed by Harrison. Stylistically, it employs more intricate drumming and guitar work than the original, which is much more sparse and runs about a minute longer.
6. About 1997's Touch Soundtrack - Dave wrote the entire score. Contains contributions from Louise Post of Veruca Salt and John Doe of X. The only songs with Lyrics are How Do You Do, This Loving Thing, and Touch, the rest are instrumentals.
Comments:
Oddly enough the title of the album was a song title released "The Color & the Shape" as a B-side on the Monkey Wrench Single. So, it was rather nice to have a tenth anniversary release include it! The only beef I have with the release is that the "Walking After You" faster version available on the 1998 X-Files Soundtrack, and A320 available on 1998's Godzilla Soundtrack and the slow version of Up in Arms are not included, and the packaging does not indicate that it is an anniversary edition. Even the disc looks identical (with the exception of the 1997 date). The only way to tell is on the back cover the track listing expands 6 tracks out from 13 to 19. With that said, the booklet expands out a few pages with a couple new pictures and a couple pages written about the experience.
