Talk Shows

From Telivision, Radio, Streaming and Podcasts...my evolution of interests in "Talk" oriented programs is (somewhat) timeframed here. Granted, Kent & Alan, Casey Cassem (sp), Paul Harvey (sp) and Rick Dee's (sp) aren't shows that I felt loyalty too, I still heard them enough to acknowledge that they may have had a listener impact.

I would have to say that above all, Pat Cashman, Michael Moore, and Tom Leykis were the first to really bring me into the Talk area.

When "KING Radio was purchased by Bonneville Broadcasting in 1994, they moved Pat (whose radio show started in 1991) to become the morning host on KIRO FM (which later bcame called “The Buzz"). After four years the Buzz altered their morning format and bumped Cashman out. From mid 2003 through April 2007 Pat joined KJR FM 95.7 as host of the morning show from 6 to 10 AM." (site) As a fan of Almost Live, I remember listening to Pat Cashman's radio show, and even getting my parents into it as we headed in to school. Towards 1996 I started to trickle out, and I was just as upset with everyone else that he had been dropped. Sadly, I also missed his KJR stint, and hope that he makes another comeback.
Michael Moore post
Michael Moore was always interesting to listen to back when I first saw TV Nation (then I back tracked into Roger & Me and then the Big One). I liked hearing what he had to say despite going too far (in my opinion) from time to time, but it didn't matter because it stimulated productive conversations on the topic.

Listening to Pat Cashman in the morning led to hearing Tom Leykis in the afternoon, initially this was on wednesday's in the back of my parents camper as I rolled newspapers for my route. "The current incarnation of The Tom Leykis Show began on the Westwood One radio network on May 2, 1994 originating from Los Angeles although the show was not aired in that city until KLSX added it to its lineup in 1997. Crew members included Dean J. DeMilio (call screener) and Bret Abbott (engineer), and Executive Producer Gary Zabransky." (wiki) For three or four years I tuned in, and loved it. I agreed with about 90 percent of what he had to say, but after completing college I tried listening to him...and the show was lame. His arguements/topics were weak compared to how he grasped them before and I just lost interest. At this point though I started listening to any and everything FM talk oriented.
Then there was a stumbling zone. My interest in the genre was huge, but programming was not. There was one guy on the Buzz in the evening that was so so, Car Talk was great for the whole family from time to time (it is not on frequently enough), and the previously despised T-Man (read on) was growing on me.

There was one show that was on after Leykis' afternoon show that was on into the evening...but I cannot remember his name. The comedic brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi (Click & Clack Tappet Brothers) bantering in Car Talk was the occassional family road trip favorite (sorry Paul Harvey). and Kevin Smith could spat commentary tracks and interviews on various dvd's that could always hook my ear in the same way Michael Moore could. Bill Mahr's late night show came in on a canadian station and was rather fun to watch (ignoring Mahr's personal life).

Slowly after High School I heard more day shows and various morning shows changed. I didn't want to like BJ Sjea, but in a dorky way I was won over. Loveline used to be my 1am get off work (sometimes pulled into a parking lot to eat fast food) show of choice. I even dipped into tuning in on Saturday's to catch some of Troubleshooter Tom help people with any problem (they had lawyers and so on assisting), it was cool. All Comedy Radio (comedy segments) jumped into the nightly programs and was great for killing pointless time. Continue Here.
