Factoids, Extras & Eggs:
1. The full album cover, front to back, features a Boeing 727 — with "Beastie Boys" emblazoned on the tail — crashing head-on into the side of a mountain. The tail of the plane has the Def Jam logo and the legend '3MTA3' which spells 'Eat Me' when viewed in a mirror. The original title for this album was Don't Be A Faggot but Columbia Records flatly refused to release the album with this title .
2. Licensed to Ill was the first rap LP to top Billboard's Pop Albums chart. It was Columbia Records' fastest selling debut record to date and sold over five million copies.
3. Rhymin' & Stealin' contains samples from Black Sabbath-Sweet Leaf, Led Zeppelin-When the Levee Breaks, & The Clash-I Fought the Law.
4. The New Style Contains samples from The B-Boys-2-3 Break.
5. She's CraftyContains samples from Led Zeppelin-The Ocean.
6. Posse in Effect Contains samples from B-Side & Fab Five Freddy-Change le Beat.
7. Slow Ride Contains samples from War-Low Rider.
8. (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!) was intended as a parody of party and attitude songs, such as "Smokin' In the Boys Room" and "I Wanna Rock." But the irony was lost on most listeners. The group hasn't performed the song live since 1987.
9. No Sleep till Brooklyn Contains samples from AC/DC-TNT, and Joan Jet and the Blackhearts-I Love Rock n' Roll.
10. Paul Revere Contains samples from Uncle Louie-I Like Funky Music, the rhythm is based on reversed drum line of Aerosmith-Walk This Way.
11. Hold It Now, Hit It Contains samples from The Jimmy Castor Bunch-The Return of Leroy, Kool & The Gang-Funky Stuff, Bob James-Take Me to the Mardi Gras, & Kurtis Blow-Christmas Rappin'.
12. Brass Monkey Contains samples from Wild Sugar-Bring it Here.
13. Slow & Low: In the booklet included with the Beastie Boys' anthology set The Sounds of Science Adam Yauch (MCA) noted that "Slow and Low" was first recorded by Run DMC in the sessions for their second album, King of Rock, but was ultimately left off the original release (though the demo version later appeared on the album's 2005 Deluxe Edition re-release). Being one of the Beasties' favorite songs from the sessions, they got Run DMC's permission to record a cover version. Yauch states that only two lines were changed for the Beastie Boys' version: "D sees real well 'cause he has four eyes" was replaced with "White Castle fries only come in one size", and a line stating Run DMC's name was changed to "We're the Beastie Boys, not Cheech & Chong".
14. Time to Get Ill Contains samples from Stevie Wonder-Boogie on Reggae Women, Steve Miller Band-Take the Money & Run, Creedence Clearwater Revival-Down on the Corner, Led Zeppelin-Custard Pie, Schoolly D-Gucci Time, and excerpts from the theme music of Green Acres and Mister Ed.
15. Rock Hard was one of the first songs released by the Beastie Boys, released by record label Def Jam on 12" in 1984. It has long been removed from print and is now considered a rare collector's item. The song samples from the AC/DC song "Back in Black"; the Beastie Boys used this sample without legal permission. Later, when the Boys planned to include the out-of-print song on their 1999 anthology The Sounds of Science, AC/DC refused to allow the sample to be used.
