Super Mario Bros The Lost Levels

Released: 6.3.86.
System: NES
Background: Because of the game's difficulty (modified gameplay mechanics and difficult level design), similarity to the first, and that Howard Lincoln (chairman of Nintendo of America) personally disliked the game, Nintendo decided not to release it in the United States. In Japan this game became known as Super Mario Bros 2. Aspects of the game released in the US appeared on Super NES' Super Mario All-Stars.
The game does not have a two-player mode. Instead, the player chooses to play either as Mario (agile runner and better traction) or as Luigi (can jump higher and farther) in the single-player. The storyline is similar to predecessor. You can obtain the regular power-ups, Super Mushrooms (increasessize, and capability to break certain bricks), and Fire Flowers (ability to throw fireballs). Mario can also collect a Starman and become invincible, making him impervious to the touch of enemy characters and most obstacles, although he will still die if he falls in a pit, falls into lava, or if time runs out. The game consists of eight worlds with four levels in each world (Underground Dungeon Worlds 1 & 5, Underwater on Worlds 3 & 6, Fortress or Castle on 4, the 2 & 7 take place at night, and yes there are hidden warp zones). The game also features a five secret worlds with four levels each. To access "Fantasy World" 9, the player must complete every castle from Worlds 1-8 in the course of the game. The other four secret worlds are labeled A through D. To access these 4 worlds, the player needs to finish the game eight times, then hold the A button and press Start at the title screen. A yellow star will appear on the title screen each time the game is beaten. Most of the games obstacles and enemies are similar to the first, with the exception of; Poison Mushrooms, Backward Warp Zones (player cannot access World 9 when Warp Zones are used), Red Piranha Plants, Floating Bloopers, and Strong Gusts of Wind (sometimes help with longer jumps).
