Cooping
A common 19th Century voting-fraud scheme in which political gangs kidnapped people, locked them in a room or “coop,” filled them with alcohol and beat them into submission. The victims were then shuttled from polling station to polling station to cast numerous ballots in the same election. They were also forced to change clothes so they could vote multiple times at the same polling station. There has been speculation that Edgar Allen Poe (who died a few days after being was found unconscious, beaten, intoxicated, and wearing ill-fitted clothing) may have been a victim of Cooping.
