1. Based on the famous song by Johnny Marks, and in turn taken from the 1939 poem of the same title written by Marks' brother-in-law, Robert L. May.
2. During the original network TV airing, commercials for General Electric featured Santa's elves from the show.
3. Hermie is the only elf without pointed ears.
4. the "new" technology had been pioneered years before, most prominently inside the gorilla King Kong (1933).
5. Santa's sleigh is normally pulled by eight reindeer - Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and Blitzen. When Rudolph is added to the team, he becomes the ninth reindeer. However, in all the sleigh flying scenes, only seven reindeer are shown pulling the sleigh.
6. During the opening credits, the show's copyright date is shown in Roman numerals as MCLXIV. In Arabic numbers, that's 1164 - it should have been MCMLXIV for 1964.
7. In 1976, a sequel to the Rankin-Bass original special was produced, entitled Rudolph's Shiny New Year and then a third in 1979 entitled Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July. Then in 2001, a a fourth in the series was released titled Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Island of Misfit Toys, produced entirely with computer animation.
