Black Boxes

The topic has come up in coversation about just how much destrction a black box can take. All of the information below has been extracted from How Stuff Works.

To ensure the quality and survivability of black boxes, manufacturers thoroughly test the crash-survivable memory unit (CSMUs). Remember, only the CSMU has to survive a crash, if accident investigators have that, they can retrieve the information they need. In order to test the unit, engineers load data onto the memory boards inside the CSMU. L-3 Communications uses a random pattern to put data onto every memory board. This pattern is reviewed on readout to determine if any of the data has been damaged by crash impact, fires or pressure.

There are several tests that make up the crash-survival sequence:

Crash impact - Researchers shoot the CSMU down an air cannon to create an impact of 3,400 Gs (1 G is the force of Earth's gravity, which determines how much something weighs). At 3,400 Gs, the CSMU hits an aluminum, honeycomb target at a force equal to 3,400 times its weight. This impact force is equal to or in excess of what a recorder might experience in an actual crash.

Pin drop - To test the unit's penetration resistance, researchers drop a 500-pound (227-kg) weight with a 0.25-inch steel pin protruding from the bottom onto the CSMU from a height of 10 feet (3 m). This pin, with 500-pounds behind it, impacts the CSMU cylinder's most vulnerable axis.

Static crush - For five minutes, researchers apply 5,000 pounds per square-inch (psi) of crush force to each of the unit's six major axis points.
Fire test - Researchers place the unit into a propane-source fireball, cooking it using three burners. The unit sits inside the fire at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,100 C) for one hour. The FAA requires that all solid-state recorders be able to survive at least one hour at this temperature.

Deep-sea submersion - The CSMU is placed into a pressurized tank of salt water for 24 hours.
Salt-water submersion - The CSMU must survive in a salt water tank for 30 days.
Fluid immersion - Various CSMU components are placed into a variety of aviation fluids, including jet fuel, lubricants and fire-extinguisher chemicals.

In addition to the orange paint and reflective tape, black boxes are equipped with an underwater locator beacon (ULB). If you look at the picture of a black box, you will almost always see a small, cylindrical object attached to one end of the device. While it doubles as a handle for carrying the black box, this cylinder is actually a beacon. This beacon sends out an ultrasonic pulse that cannot be heard by human ears but is readily detectable by sonar and acoustical locating equipment. There is a submergence sensor on the side of the beacon that looks like a bull's-eye. When water touches this sensor, it activates the beacon.
The beacon sends out pulses at 37.5 kilohertz (kHz) and can transmit sound as deep as 14,000 feet (4,267 m). Once the beacon begins "pinging," it pings once per second for 30 days. This beacon is powered by a battery that has a shelf life of six years.

Brief-Origins of Marriage

(taken from "The Week-Briefing" April 2, 2004, Vol. 4, Iss. __, pp. 13)

How old is the institution: The best available evidence suggests that it’s about 4,350 years old. For thousands of years before that, most anthropologists believe, families consisted of loosely organized groups of as many as 30 people, with several male leaders, multiple women shared by them, and children. As hunter-gatherers settled down into agrarian civilizations, society had a need for more stable arrangements. The first recorded evidence of marriage ceremonies uniting one woman and one man dates from about 2350 B.C., in Mesopotamia. Over the next several hundred years, marriage evolved into a widespread institution embraced by the ancient Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans. But back then, marriage had little to do with love or with religion.

What was it about, then: Marriage’s primary purpose was to bind women to men, and thus guarantee that a man’s children were truly his biological heirs. Through marriage, a woman became a man’s property. In the betrothal ceremony of ancient Greece, a father would hand over his daughter with these words: “I pledge my daughter for the purpose of producing legitimate offspring.” Among the ancient Hebrews, men were free to take several wives; married Greeks and Romans were free to satisfy their sexual urges with concubines, prostitutes, and even teenage male lovers, while their wives were required to stay home and tend to the household. If wives failed to produce offspring, their husbands could give them back and marry someone else.

When did religion become involved: As the Roman Catholic Church became a powerful institution in Europe, the blessings of a priest became a necessary step for a marriage to be legally recognized. By the eighth century, marriage was widely accepted in the Catholic church as a sacrament, or a ceremony to bestow God’s grace. At the Council of Trent in 1563, the sacramental nature of marriage was written into canon law.

Did this change the nature of marriage: Church blessings did improve the lot of wives. Men were taught to show greater respect for their wives, and forbidden from divorcing them. Christian doctrine declared that “the twain shall be one flesh,” giving husband and wife exclusive access to each other’s body. This put new pressure on men to remain sexually faithful. But the church still held that men were the head of families, with their wives deferring to their wishes.

When did love enter the picture: Later than you might think. For much of human history, couples were brought together for practical reasons, not because they fell in love. In time, of course, many marriage partners came to feel deep mutual love and devotion. But the idea of romantic love, as a motivating force for marriage, only goes as far back as the Middle Ages. Naturally, many scholars believe the concept was “invented” by the French. Its model was the knight who felt intense love for someone else’s wife, as in the case of Sir Lancelot and King Arthur’s wife, Queen Guinevere. Twelfth-century advice literature told men to woo the object of their desire by praising her eyes, hair, and lips. In the 13th century, Richard de Fournival, physician to the king of France, wrote “Advice on Love,” in which he suggested that a woman cast her love flirtatious glances—“anything but a frank and open entreaty.”

Did love change marriage: It sure did. Marilyn Yalom, a Stanford historian and author of A History of the Wife, credits the concept of romantic love with giving women greater leverage in what had been a largely pragmatic transaction. Wives no longer existed solely to serve men. The romantic prince, in fact, sought to serve the woman he loved. Still, the notion that the husband “owned” the wife continued to hold sway for centuries. When colonists first came to America—at a time when polygamy was still accepted in most parts of the world—the husband’s dominance was officially recognized under a legal doctrine called “coverture,” under which the new bride’s identity was absorbed into his. The bride gave up her name to symbolize the surrendering of her identity, and the husband suddenly became more important, as the official public representative of two people, not one. The rules were so strict that any American woman who married a foreigner immediately lost her citizenship.

How did this tradition change: Women won the right to vote. When that happened, in 1920, the institution of marriage began a dramatic transformation. Suddenly, each union consisted of two full citizens, although tradition dictated that the husband still ruled the home. By the late 1960s, state laws forbidding interracial marriage had been thrown out, and the last states had dropped laws against the use of birth control. By the 1970s, the law finally recognized the concept of marital rape, which up to that point was inconceivable, as the husband “owned” his wife’s sexuality. “The idea that marriage is a private relationship for the fulfillment of two individuals is really very new,” said historian Stephanie Coontz, author of The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap. “Within the past 40 years, marriage has changed more than in the last 5,000.”

Men who married men: Gay marriage is rare in history—but not unknown. The Roman emperor Nero, who ruled from A.D. 54 to 68, twice married men in formal wedding ceremonies, and forced the Imperial Court to treat them as his wives. In second- and third-century Rome, homosexual weddings became common enough that it worried the social commentator Juvenal, says Marilyn Yalom in A History of the Wife. “Look—a man of family and fortune—being wed to a man!” Juvenal wrote. “Such things, before we’re very much older, will be done in public.” He mocked such unions, saying that male “brides” would never be able to “hold their husbands by having a baby.” The Romans outlawed formal homosexual unions in the year 342. But Yale history professor John Boswell says he’s found scattered evidence of homosexual unions after that time, including some that were recognized by Catholic and Greek Orthodox churches. In one 13th-century Greek Orthodox ceremony, the “Order for Solemnisation of Same Sex Union,” the celebrant asked God to grant the participants “grace to love one another and to abide unhated and not a cause of scandal all the days of their lives, with the help of the Holy Mother of God and all thy saints.”

Ultimate Collectors Edition Comments (It's the way to go)
1. New & Old Material: (See DVD Active for back covers) For the most part the new releases are flat out awesome. Digitally and tunistically fixed up, they are a perfect way to release a DVD. All the supplemental material has been provided in five categories. All the previous Special Edition bonus materials are contained under the "Mission Dossier," "Ministry of Propoganda" (Theatrical Archives, Television Broadcasts & Radio Communications) and "Image Database" categories. The last two sections may have a slight addition, switch, and one or two possible deletions (I noticed one picture missing) but as a heads up, I am not sifting through to check trailer and picture changes between the two versions. The "Declassified Mi6 Vault" section includes a wide variety of new extras. The "007 Mission Control" section contains a montage of segments for character reference.
2. Booklet Details: The Collectors booklets are overall exactly the same textually as the Special Edition releases, though they have some aspects missing (trimmed details, one or two random facts removed), they actually added some more new information to them. For the most part, many of the still shots were removed and replaced with poster images..
3. Irritations: Once again, a Sean Connery commentary has yet to be included (though it seems Bond has a bad taste in his mouth). Unfortunately, this (five discs per volume) four volume wave of releases annoyingly places the movies out of sequencial order. Because of their thin sleeves, you want to keep them in the boxes, and as a fan, it would have been nice to have the boxes list the films in their original order. While it is awesome that each movie in a double disc in a thin sleeve casing, The collectors booklets do not fit inside the case without damaging them! That is ridiculous! Especially since they could have fit in them just fine (had they thought of trimming the DVD holder button from sticking out so far)...so I place them underneath the outside cover of each film (Grrr). The Interactive Guides are nice, but an incredibly pointless addition. I will definately note differences in my comments for each film if I feel ripped off, but so far I am impressed. Die Another Day seems to be missing bonus material, and the movie jitters horribly like the prior release did (argh! Do I have to send the whole boxset just to get a new one?)

Current Facts 1

Hurricanes
Based on previous recordings, hurricanes have consistent cycles. “For about 40 years, there is a long cycle of frequent hurricane activity, then a lull of about 25 years during which fewer hurricanes are born. Hurricane experts say that we were in a lull between 1970 and 1995…Starting in 1995, there have been three or more major storms every year except one. For the next 10 to 30 years, forecasters say, people living in Florida, the Southeast, and Texas can expect to be hit at least three major hurricanes every year. This year the Atlantic Ocean near the equator is 1 to 2 degrees warmer than normal…as a result, this has already begun the worst hurricane season in 40 years. For every degree that the water temperature rises, MIT atmosphere scientist Kerry Emanuel says, maximum storm winds increase 5 mph.” In theory, if oceans continue to get warmer, within a decade or two we could witness “superviolent hurricanes with winds exceeding 175 mph or even 200 mph. A 200 mph hurricane wouldn’t be merely twice as strong as a 100 mph storm; it would be dozens of times stronger.”

Water

Another topic involving water came up in a column written by Margaret Wertheim for the Los Angeles Times. She says that, “More than 1.1 billion people, one out of every six humans alive, do not have safe drinking water. Experts say a relatively small investment, between $10 billion and $20 billion a year for the next 15 years, could give every person on the planet access to drinking water and sanitation. Americans last year spent $61 billion on soft drinks and $71 billion on beer.”

Ears
“A new study at the University of California found that our ears process sounds quite differently. The left ear is more attuned to music, whereas the right responds more to speech. The study could lead to better ways to treat hearing loss.” See “The Week, iss 176, pp 22”

Fingers
Microsoft is releasing a product that uses fingerprint recognition so that users can save internet passwords to their fingerprint instead of hassling with memorization and other means.

The Choclati-Code
Bad pun I know, but the truth is there was a code that existed for chocolate candies to have defining swirls on them. Check out the story at Straight Dope, ““The Squiggle Code to Identify Chocolates.”

Earth Movements
In one year, Wind moves 1,000 tons of the Earth’s surface. Ocean Waves also move 1,000 tons. Glaciers move 4,300. Continental Mountain Building is at 14,000. Rivers move 24,000, and Oceanic Mountain Building is at 30,000.

Earth Movements II
Humans move 45,000 tons of the Earth’s surface a year. “More than all of the effects of nature combined. Over the past 5,000 years, we have moved the equivalent of a mountain range 13,000 feet high and 60 miles long.”

1,000 Year-Old Brewery Unearthed
"Archaelogists discover a 1,000 year-old full-scale brewery in Peru, where the Wari people made chicha, a beerlike beverage."

Batman Headlines Everywhere!
On the set for the new Batman movie, the actor portraying Batman, Christian Bale became a hero as he chased after a “runaway Plymouth, dove through the car's open window, and steered it to safety.”
Jason Hatch dressed as Batman climbed the side of Buckingham palace. A partner dressed as Robin diverted attention. Hatch stood outside the royal family’s balcony for five hours after he dangled a banner that read “Super Dads of Fathers 4 Justice Fighting for Your Right to See Your Kids,” a group that wants to liberalize child-visitation laws.“
A 6-foot, 275 pound bearded man crashed a child’s birthday party in Oak Forest, Ill., announcing ‘I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman.’ He then helped himself to a piece of cake before leaving.”

Mount St. Helens Back Again
Seismologists believe there's an increased likelihood of a hazardous event at Mount St. Helens due to recent changes in the mountain's seismic activity, and a notice of volcanic unrest was issued Sunday afternoon by the U.S. Geological Survey. ‘The key issue is a small explosion without warning. That would be the major event that we're worried about right now,’ said Willie Scott, a geologist with the USGS office in Vancouver. Initially, hundreds of tiny earthquakes that began Thursday morning had slowly declined through Saturday. By Sunday, however, the swarm had changed to include more than 10 larger earthquakes of magnitude 2 to 2.8, the most in a 24-hour period since the last dome-building eruption in October 1986, Scott said. A similar swarm of quakes in November 2001 and another in the summer of 1998 did not result in an eruption. However, the quakes could increase the likelihood of small rock slides from the 876-foot-tall lava dome within the mountain's crater.”

The Tonight Show
Jay Leno announced that he'll be replaced in 2009 by Conan O'Brien. “In less than two minutes, Leno managed to place the blame on NBC for subtly edging him out of his job, 'They came to me and said, We don't want to lose Conan O'Brien. I said, 'Oh, OK, what does that mean?' and for ruining his relationship with David Letterman back in '92, 'Quite frankly, good friendships were permanently damaged.' At the end of his speech, he went so far as to compare the passing on of the Tonight Show post to a dynastic succession: 'You hold it, and then you hand it off to the next person.'
