Friday morning, I needed to find a hotel. So, I jumped online looking for something with a Jacuzzi, and expedia pointed me in the direction. I looked at about a dozen places, and ultimately liked my first choice for what it had and location (definitely better than others). After work I zipped over to Silver Cloud Hotel and reserved a room (421) with a Jacuzzi for Friday and Saturday night.

Jacuzzi Suite: One king bed. 380 square feet. Electric fireplace and two-person spa tub with bathrobes and basket of bath amenities. Contemporary decor with earth tones and dark wood furniture. Granite desk. Refrigerator, microwave, and coffeemaker. Bathroom with bowed shower rod. Cable TV with premium channels, pay movies, and Nintendo video games. Free local calls; complimentary high-speed Internet access. Most rooms have sliding glass doors. (As you can see, the "Sliding glass doors" was the final pitch that pushed me over , but then wait! It says that "most rooms" have them…uh oh! My fingers are crossed)

I was tired, and thinking of a hundred things I needed to compile together. This was my first chance to think about how to play this all the way out from all that scattered ideas I had. Unfortunately, all these thoughts were in my head as I was reserving the room. I even asked for a room with a spa in it! I gave them our address with "SE" missing in it, and realized that as I left.

I had to reach Duane. No answer, on cell or at home. What the heck! My thoughts jumped to Adam...and I thought I better call him now if I had any hope to be able to include him in the event. For quite a while I wanted the immediate family members to be present at some point in the process and was never really sure how...and it struck me as plain obvious that Saturday (the day after) would be a good celebratory time. Adam said that his boss had placed him back on weekends despite his protest, and told me that he would give him an ultimatum...either way, he told me that he was in, and would be there. Whew. So, I called Kristen, whom managed to stay pretty calm. I told her to keep the weekend open. She said she had a wedding to go to that Saturday night. Didn't matter. I guessed a meeting time of 11am, and chatted a bit more about the ring ideas. In my mind I concluded that it would be best to go in on Monday and pick a temporary ring. I would look at engagement ring prospects, but thought that our four year anniversary mark would be a good upgrade point. Plus my pocket needed to figure out its current expenses. As for Jason & Caroline, they were leaving at 4am for Mexico...I debated, but at the time I was not quite sure one way or the other to say anything to them. So I didn't. they would be coming back Saturday the 8th, and they could celebrate with us then. I knew picking them up would be an issue too, and guessed that Adam might possibly go get them, or some other alternative yet to come to me. I also knew that I couldn't keep the secret the whole time. If I could up till Friday, I was set. This did not seem like a tough feat, at the time. I also felt that I wanted something of Janel's mother involved. At the moment, all that came to mind was when Janel had said that the show Doogie Howser brought back memories. So, I figured this could be a way to keep those memories alive and strong...and who can turn down a trip to Best Buy? I called my parents up and reserved Friday and Saturday by saying that Janel and I were coming over to visit. This was done to keep the weekend available, I only left them in the dark because I was awaiting consent from Duane.

On April 6, our 3rd anniversary came and went. So, when Janel mentioned something about a halfway mark being an ok time...I kept that in my head to see if that would be possible. Since this was rougly sometime within the first week of October, I had a little while for ideas to roll around. Because of weekend activities, weekends started filling up left and right, and things were getting kinda close. However, the best weekend available targeted around the 7th. That was close enough for there to be an opportunity and still have a surprise.
Earlier in the week I had been granted three extra bonus days off that needed to be scheduled quickly before the years end. I sat down with Trisha and asked about a few dates and she approved all of them...this was my first "it's a go" light.
Later in the afternoon Scott Conway came by with some paperwork and I was unable to hide my open screen fast enough...and he said, "no it's too late, bring it back...what are you learning to dance or something?" he said grinning totally catching me in the act. I did not elaborate why, but found the whole thing rather amusing. I was looking at the following dance steps.
My actual plan needed a list and fast. I hit the most important points quickly in my mind, and addressed the immediate the next day. I had an idea or two I was stumbling over and began figuring out time to tackle each point.

Backpack Generator

Researchers have developed a backpack that turns that energy into electricity. The development could eventually allow field scientists, hikers, explorers, soldiers and disaster workers to produce their own electricity.The researchers used a backpack fastened to the carrying frame by springs. The up-and-down motion caused by walking powers a small generator, producing electricity that can be used directly or stored in a capacitor or battery.
It doesn't crank out a lot of juice - just a bit more than 7 watts - but that's enough to run things like an MP3 player, a personal data assistant, night vision goggles, a handheld global positioning system or a GSM cell phone.

Ranked European Healthcare

Health Consumer Powerhouse, a private institution based in Sweden, has published a study on healthcare standards in 12 European countries. Overall, 20 indicators across five areas of healthcare were studied, and Holland came out on top.

The study looked at patients' rights and information, care outcomes, customer friendliness, waiting times for common treatments and access to medication. Swizerland came second in the rankings and Germany came third.

The United Kingdom ranked ninth, only above Italy, Poland and Hungary. Whilst the UK was ranked as the best for offering health information, overall healthcare was classed as "mediocre". Spain, France, Belgium, Estonia and Sweden were also studied.

Japan-30,000 Suicides

Japan Tops 30,000 Suicides for Seventh Straight Year. According to the totals from 2004 there were 32,325 suicides. 2,102, or 6.1 percent less than 2003. That was the year Japan reached an all-time high of 34,427 suicides according to the National Police Agency.

Health problems was the most common reason of suicide in 2004 with 14,786, or 45.7 percent of the victims. The next was financial difficulties, with 7,947, or 24.6 percent. Family troubles came next with 2,992, or 9.3 percent of the victims.

Those who committed suicide with others they met through the Internet increased from 34 in 2003 to 55 in 2004. Most of the people committing suicide were unemployed (47.8%). Males accounted for 70% of suicides with 23,272 victims.

Shoe TV

100 steps that a child must take in a pair of "smart shoes" during the day to earn one minute of TV time in the evening, as part of a novel anti-obesity effort in the UK. The new shoes, called Square Eyes, come installed with an electronic sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer takes in a day. That information is passed on to a receiver connected to the TV, which will shut off once the wearer runs out of viewing time, based on the day's excertions. The shoes were created by a student in a design program at Brunel University in London. Normal pedometers can be tricked into recording steps through shaking, but these shoes are harder to dupe. "It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort," the student says. "That was one of my main design considerations."

John's Letter

Hello Everybody!

Surprise Visitors
Jim & Cindy were in town for the weekend and gave us a call on Saturday morning. Cindy was out getting a haircut at Gene Juarez (her brother is a partner). Jim wanted to hang out with us (including Jason and Caroline) while staying up in Bellevue. So, we carpooled with Jason & Caroline ad sat at some benches at the mall, catching up and chatting. While we were there two kids came walking by at first, but then skated. Their shoes has wheels in the heels, and that seemed pretty cool, and we were all memorized for a little while as they subconsciously switched between walking and skating in smooth transitions. When Cindy’s appointment finished we ate at PF Chang's for lunch. The lettuce wraps were delicious. Their daughter Joy and her husband Carl are now back in DC, and not only do they both work in the same building, but the same floor as well!

Insane Email News
Saturday was also a crazy batch of emails from all kinds of friends.

High School: Amber Schmid and David Kerr got married last month. They have been a couple for something over 8 years or so, and Amber had that scare last year about undetermined internal bleeding…anyway, we all had lost contact throughout this year (and all of us tried to reach one another several times), and then by fluke, got the right email addresses, and received the news of their wedding! I also heard from Alex Zaveruha who is now doing some recruiting job at a health care place, and he lives in a tiny apartment at Lake Union.

Skagit Valley College: Jon Moore has informed me that he has a bar exam the first weekend in October, and he has been preparing for that for the last two months…

CWU: Andy Martin has informed me that he has been in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, because the company he works for has a contract from FEMA so he has been sent down to assist in the relief efforts. His daughter Sydney will be turning 3 this December.

WSU: Dave Montgomery wrote that his dad has been in the hospital for Cellulitis, and would not be able to return to work, possibly 2 to 3 weeks. His message went on about how a load of wood came to heat their house with the woodstove, but one of our farm trucks would not start and was in the way of the pile that had been started. So Dave and one of the gentlemen that brought the wood over in a dump truck decided to push the truck. To no avail they were about to call it quits, when Dave’s mom came to join in…here is his exact quote, “As she pushed she fell flat on her face, leaving her arms up against the grill and bumper. Between her weight and the angle at which her arms were at, something had to give. She ended up breaking both of her arms clean right under the ball in the shoulder joint. That's right, broke both her arms!”

Tickets
This upcoming Thursday Entertainment Weekly magazine gave us two tickets to the EMP to see some upcoming bands, have free cocktails and food. I have no idea what kind of music we shall be seeing, but it should be fun.

Distractive Projects
The road paving project at night outside our apartment is finally over and now we can sleep without everything shaking and rumbling about. They added a good inch to two inches. Sadly, for Janel, other projects are going on. The school has been tarring the roof and the smell has been coming through the vents. A quick poll in one of the classrooms showed that two-thirds of the students had headaches too.

Becky Wilson
CWU: Becky Wilson and her boyfriend Andrew Fickles joined us on Sunday to set them up with a Costco membership (and our own shopping). Becky's birthday was last week so we celebrated with a meal out at Claim Jumpers (Go figure, and seriously, it was their choice!) They live pretty close by in an apartment just behind Fred Meyers.

Factoids: 1. When Jared Svenning pulls Roddy down and says "What the fuck is goin' on up there?" it is intended to be a reference to the line from Animal House (although in Animal House, the line is "down there" not "up there"). 2. Brodie wears a Henry Hudson Regional shirt. Henry Hudson Regional is the high school in Highlands, NJ where director Kevin Smith graduated. 3. The US 1 Flea Market - AKA "The Dirt Mall" - was torn down in the mid-1990s. It is now the site of a multiplex cinema. 4. The name "Gwen Turner" is a reference to Go Fish writer/director Guinevere Turner. 5. Ben Affleck's character is named "Shannon Hamilton." Shannen Doherty was briefly married to Ashley Hamilton, although she did not adopt his last name. 6. If you didn't catch it, When Shannen Doherty runs to tell Jay and Silent Bob that Brodie and T.S. are being arrested, Ethan Suplee ad-libs, "Brenda?" - a joke reference to Doherty's character on "Beverly Hills, 90210." 7. "La Fours", the mall security guard, is a reference to "La Force," the bounty hunter after Robert Redford and Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. 8. Two main characters named Brodie Bruce and T.S. Quint are a reference to Jaws where there were characters called Brody and Quint and where the shark was nicknamed "Bruce" on the set. 9. Doherty had a clause in her contract that she could keep everything her character wore, so came up with the plan that her character should wear everything she bought on her shopping trip. Comments: Rating B+. (Unknown, Own) Overall, my advice is wait if you already have the Collectors Edition DVD, don't pick up the 10th Anniversary unless you are a die-hard fan. A 12th Anniversary Edition is in the works with an additional half hour of footage. (According to comments in the Side B "Extended Cut Introduction.")

Differences: The main difference is simply this. The Collectors Edition contained a fold-out booklet, Extended does not. Collectors has live footage from the feature commentary, Extended has the commentary track but not the video footage. Collectors has Production Notes, Extended does not. Extended does however take almost all of the Deleted scenes in Collectors, cleaned them up and reproduced as the Extended Cut. However, there are a few clips on Collectors Deleted Scenes that were not implemented into the Extended Cut (one example is Afleck's alternate sex video in a dress). That also means the Deleted scenes introductions present on the Collectors is not on the Extended. Maybe on the 12th anniversary they could include them as an option to see (like by clicking a button in the midst of the movie, and it takes you to the footage, cuts, etc). Just a thought. Doesn't matter, new edition in two years regardless. Aside from that I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I am a fan of all the added tidbits...here are some additional fan based locations to check out.
